Downtown Royal Oak's new Gemmayze Lebanese Kitchen and Lounge wasn't intended to be your grandfather's kind of Lebanese restaurant, says co-owner Elias Hajjar, 30, who opened the chic new spot in early May with his cousin, Nicholas Aubrey, 31.

My husband, Leonard, and I frequent many Mediterranean restaurants around Metro Detroit, but Gemmayze, South Main Street in Royal Oak, is refreshingly unique. The atmosphere and decor are more modern than I am used to seeing. It has a good mix of traditional and modern pieces such as booths lined with Persian... and artwork made of blue and aqua glass.

The space at 310 S. Main in downtown Royal Oak had been dark for two years — until last month. A restaurant with the enigmatic name Gemmayze took over the two-story premises (once Small Plates). The new Lebanese food restaurant and lounge will host a dinner tonight in celebration of its arrival on Main Street in downtown Royal Oak.

It's been open four weeks and Gemmayze Lebanese Kitchen and Lounge is finally ready for its grand opening. So tonight the new eatery celebrates its arrival on Main Street with an event to benefit two charities close to the owners' hearts.
